Summer is here and the rays from the sun has our skin baking, drying out and in need of extra TLC. Fall and winter will be here soon and the cooler, dry air can have the same effect as the heat and the sun - flaky, dull skin! Products to help prevent and protect our bodies can be composed of chemicals and additives that temporarily help but may have long term heath effects. The expense of natural or organic alternatives can be costly. A great way to get the products you need, control the ingredients and see results is to DIY it!

Making your own creams, lotions, scrubs etc. can seem daunting but a little effort goes a long way in the future of your skin. The ingredients can be used in a variety of products and for multiple batches so although the initial investment may add up, it will be worth it in the life span of its use. One such ingredient is coconut oil.

Coconut oil is a wonderful ingredient to use in a variety of skin friendly concoctions. But not all coconut oil is created equal. The cream of the crop will be an extra virgin, unrefined and organic variety. Coconut oil is great to treat skin issues like dry skin and eczema, protect skin from the sun and heal the skin from minor burns and lesions. Coconut oil is great to consume also but today we will use it for to make an exfoliating scrub and a moisture rich cream.

Here’s a great Coconut Sugar Scrub shared by newleafwellness.biz :

Homemade Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

Ingredients:

1/4 cup granulated sugar (You can use up to 1/2 cup if you want your scrub to have a more coarse, sand-like texture.)

1/2 cup coconut oil (I use Trader Joe’s organic virgin coconut oil.)

Optional>> 1 tablespoon citrus fruit zest (The zest from one piece of fruit) (I’ve tried grapefruit, lemon, and orange.) OR

Optional>> About 1/2 teaspoon of citrus essential oil (about 50 drops) (I’ve tried certified organic grapefruit, lemon, and orange essential oils.)

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients. (Unlike my homemade coconut oil lotions, I do not recommend heating the coconut oil prior to mixing, because hot oil will dissolve the sugar.)

2. Pour into desired container, seal, label and enjoy!
