Preparing children to be global citizens

Posted by Katie Tastrom on Mar 10, 2016 9:50:56 AM

The Internet and the increased availability of air travel has made the world feel a lot smaller. Children that are growing up in this new world will need to have more familiarity with international cultures and languages than children of the past did. As parents we want to give our children the tools they need to succeed and flourish, and it is now becoming imperative that children understand the world outside of their own country and culture.  Along with that understanding, learning tolerance and respect for the traditions and customs of others is important.  Learning another language (or two or three) can make a huge difference when traveling and exploring.

One way to help children get a better sense of the broader world is through international travel. Children like to experience new things and traveling can be a way for them to learn about different cultures and languages through fun and sightseeing. Through travel kids can have a first-hand experience of interacting with other cultures that they will hopefully never forget. Traveling is both fun and educational for the entire family.

Not all families are able to travel, whether due to cost, available vacation time, or other considerations.  Perhaps your children are too young or you don’t feel quite up to the task of wrangling little ones on an international journey.   Luckily there is a way to bring cultural exchange to you, right in your own home, through Au Pairs. Au Pairs are experienced child care providers from other countries who come to the United States at the invitation of the Department of State. Au Pairs live with host families and provide childcare for the family. The family houses the Au Pair, welcomes them as a member of the family and pays them a weekly stipend for up to 45 hours of childcare per week. Au Pairs are a great way to bring the world to your child's door. It can also be a wonderful way to help your children get a head start on learning another language.

It is so important these days for children to have an understanding of the world outside of their own country. There are many ways for children to get this cultural exchange whether through traveling, Au Pairs, or other cultural exchange opportunities.

The Au Pair Foundation is a trusted resource in matching Au Pairs with families and providing the support for both parties to have an optimal experience.  Au Pair Foundation likes to say that “we bring the world to you!”  If you think you would like to host an au pair and interested in learning more, reach out to Au Pair Foundation and get answers to your questions, they are happy to help! Au Pair Foundation was voted by thier host families as the best Au Pair agency in 2014 and 2015.
